BUTTON DOWNS...OVERSIZED AND TRADITIONAL

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEN06XgR4ED0B6Rd4yQnhqSEdaNGqfXCA4ea3TtTcAktabVkJGJLCu3ypEt0MUrAAzrFzn2FOOFh5h5b5wONBRjzZKwgh73QzfpfX4esLiplQs3SKGUZPTxvCwhVV2fBuBu9QGjLcXK_8/s320/vanessa.jpg
Anyone that knows me, knows that I like button down shirts.  I have 30+ button downs that vary in length, fit, and color/print.  I have been asked why do I have so many.  I have a few reasons why I own so many button downs.  Meetings and interviews are just two reasons.

On the days that I have to run out of the house (I was moving when the pic above and below was taken) or don't want form fitting clothes, I like to wear leggings and an over sized button down shirt.  When it's hot out, I leave the leggings behind if the shirt is long enough to pass as a dress.  I also throw in a belt at the waist from time to time to accentuate my waist.  I like my figure so I have no problem showing it off. :)

That being said....over sized clothing should never be used to hide anything out of insecurity.  Love yourself and your body the way it is at whatever stage you are in.  If you're unhappy with your weight, lose the weight.  If you have small breast or no butt or wide hips...accept it and move on.

This is a photo of me in one of my over sized button downs and leggings during my last move.  If you are having a hard time finding an over sized button down specifically made for women, buy a men's dress shirt or take one from your man. (Don't tell him I said so!!)

It should also be noted that if you are a plus sized or petite women, this look has the potential to make you larger or stocky.  This same concept goes for women with an apple shape.  This will make you look pregnant even if you aren't.  Plus sized and petite women should accessorize with a belt at the smallest part of your waste.  Do not buy a shirt that is way too big (in width).  The photo below gives a fairly good example of a good length to wear an over sized shirt if you are plus sized.  A few inches shorter wouldn't hurt and the belt could have been better selected.

Accessories should always be proportionate to your body and even more so when you are either petite or plus sized.  The girls in the middle get to play a little bit more when it comes to these things.  Remember, you never want the accessories to wear you.  You are the one wearing them.

These are bad examples...

....frumpy is not a good look for anyone.(see below)

....the petite girl....not a good look..

Pregnant women get a pass when it comes to this look.  Let's be straight to the point.  If you are pregnant, you are allowed to look pregnant BUT only if you are pregnant.  Your temporary shape should definitely be flaunted for the duration of your pregnancy.

As I mentioned earlier, the over sized shirt can be worn without leggings when the weather gets warm.  I bought one from ASOS to wear into the spring.  I had every intention of wearing it a little this winter but I think it'll just debut this spring.  American Apparel and Urban Outfitters both carry a variety of over sized and traditional button downs for a reasonable price.

Button downs do not just look good with leggings or a suit.  They can be worn with shorts, jeans, or a skirt.  When wearing any of the aforementioned bottoms with your button down, tucking all or part of the shirt in depends on how big the shirt is and if it is flattering on you.

Nice job with the shoes....

Also, tying a knot in the bottom of your button down is a good idea.

The Marc by Marc Jacobs Spring 2012 line features an over sized button down.  The piece looks comfortable but, in my opinion, is a little bit too over sized in the upper back and the sleeves.

Don't be afraid of the button down!!  It's not just for the business professionals.  Button downs, especially white, are a essential to every wardrobe because they are very versatile and look great on anyone.  Fashion can be quite simple.  Don't make it hard.  I hope this answers the questions in reference to the button down shirt.

PENNY LOAFERS

I know Michael is dead (R.I.P.) but these shoes aren't dead.  Last year they made a come back and this trend, like many others, will trickle into 2012.

I think they're cute.  Well...some of them.  There are plenty of styles out there.  High heeled and flat.  The flat are the big trend for the spring.  I like the smoking loafers more than any other loafers right now.  My favorite pair that I own are Steven by Steve Madden in leopard calf hair.  I wore them with a denim button down and red skinny jeans and it was one of the cutest and most comfy outfits EVER! https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3009KgoxsP4F_ssNDn5UTjCmGLoknQ18FvK1wvqk6I7hL-an4ZpibYGY2MRYDzM3-kPn7CmfsIhJ6fr5ynCQ0xVW1LgGQnLsHtdNtwCX2gjtzapRheTaeh1yttnoSb2Ibz6xktLOeZVhk/s1600/steve+madden-+leopard+loafer.jpg

If you don't like loafers, especially penny loafers, don't buy a pair just because they're "in."  If worn the right way they can be cute.  I saw a flat version of them on "give them away" sale at Target. ("give them away" sale = so cheap, they were giving them away)  The black are still regular priced ($24.99) online at target.com.  That is still a deal for penny loafers.  The red penny loafers are on sale for half the price.

Of course I can't mention penny loafers without mentioning Audrey Hepburn.  She was always so classy and tres chic.  So was Grace Kelly.

Kate Moss proves that they are still tres chic in this time period....

Thigh high socks paired with shorts or a skirt is also very cute with penny loafers.  I like her sock and shoe combo....not a huge fan of the rest. (YIKES)

Rolling or cuffing them with jeans is also an option....

BUTTON BACK SWEATER

I like the uniqueness of these sweaters.  I just got one tonight from Old Navy in an reddish orange hue (pictured below). I RARELY find anything that I like at Old Navy and this was by coincidence.  My mom (ANTI-shopper) and I went to pick out something for my aunt's birthday.  Nevertheless,  I'm excited about the many ways that I'm going to wear it.  The first way will probably be with a white or blue button down, cut-out jeans, and either leopard smoking loafers, cobalt blue kitten heels, or nude pumps.....decisions, decisions.

The one below is at Charlotte Russe and it's on sale online for $13.49.

I know..I know...sweaters??  I'm supposed to be talking about spring BUT we're not done with winter yet!  Depending on your location, you may have cooler temperatures during the spring time so sweaters come in handy.
http://s7d2.scene7.com/is/image/UrbanOutfitters/14739387_45_b?$detailmain$

I find enjoyment when I can get a great sweater on sale and this is a good time to buy nice sweaters and stock up.  The buttons only add a little something different so don't fear they will not be cool to wear next season.  Try to not get too crazy and buy too many unless they fit you better than anything you've ever had and you enjoy the uniqueness of the buttons on the back.

Lands' End Canvas line had this one and it was really cute.

http://bim.shopstyle.com/pim/b8/71/b8714a97aba4a0572411635a19c49cc2_best.jpghttp://origin.kaboodle.com/hi/img/b/0/0/18d/9/AAAACwDUdDQAAAAAAY2QUQ.jpg?v=1317747843000

I know this was supposed to be about sweaters that button down the back but I couldn't help but to throw this one in. While in Old Navy, I spotted a few other amazing items and this sweater (pictured below) is really at the top of my list.  This sweater probably can't be worn into the spring because it is partially made of acrylic but, I could see this coming in handy for as many seasons as it will last.  I give there up and coming design team kudos for their recent collection.  The last 4-5 years have been very disappointing to me.  I can now do this Old Navy casual bit from time to time.

TRENDS....

High/Low Knit Midi Skirt

It's versatile, light, and super cute.  The front is obviously shorter than the back but it is more flattering when it's not too short in the front.  Closer to the knee (about 2 to 3 inches above the knee) is appropriate at any age.  Try it on before buying.  I bought a few from Target and only kept one because the others didn't fit the same although they were the same size.  Bummer though because one print was super cute but the coral was a keeper!  The skirt can be turned so that the short side is on either side (right or left) and this gives an asymmetrical hem line. Here are a FEW examples and places to find it if you like this trendy item and there is always Google... :)

Yellow!!!!!

So, yellow is classic, of course, but it's also a "trend" for Spring/Summer 2012....

Bright Colors

Yes...Yellow may fall into this category sometimes but when I say BRIGHT COLORS...you know what I mean...

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdimh33D6e2XLkSQEF53RfwsrCFrvBLDp6ktYUMnvRHohkSsMgJXSojIwWr3Z0FpG5jWnl7n_-EtzjoWPapG1ShHDquDLNSwoQKN0z1jYHSSRrGbyUpUmanfWavPY5NwanCfTWDEAel1c/+paris+fashion+week+fall+2011+17+neon+yellow+skirt.jpghttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/314cBY7FFBL._SY445_.jpg....that's what I mean.

The truth is....bright colors are always in but many won't wear them until they are trending so this spring and summer... you have your opportunity....

This pink bag (below) is adorable.  Buy a bright handbag and wear it all year round.
http://www.marieclaire.com/cm/marieclaire/images/jp/1209-bright-accessories-3-de.jpg

You can pair colors together which is called color blocking.  This was a trend at the end of last year but that doesn't mean it can't find it's way into this year.  My faves are:  turquoise/purple/green, pink/orange, orange/purple, or yellow/blue.  Whatever you choose...wear it with confidence. :)
http://www.zeralyn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Katy-Perry-ELLE-Magazine-Cover_in_the_magazine.jpghttps://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAbPt3hyR3_LzRuA2ZAxXfLE_N8jMjDjX6fGFEjuuy7uNuw4u_-Ox0_7piPtQWILflbEVx_Mnk3s4Mg2aX83B05q6FQtolwSckT0G8_ngovMWM2CmyXWzimfyFd5Z8ItG5g9hKaE-rlPg/s1600/color+blocking.jpg

I personally wear what I want regardless of trends because I usually have my own trends.  I like some things for a few weeks and some things I like for years but they most often have nothing to do with what is trendy.  Set your own trends....never follow the crowd.  Also, not everything looks good on everyone so if you can't make that decision on your own, take an honest friend with you when you try on things or to critique you before you go out.

CLASSICS....

Basic colored garments (white, black, navy, grey, etc.) will never go "out of style" and they are a necessity for any wardrobe.  Many runway collections for this spring have made the basics the foundation for their pieces and added texture or embellishments to stand out from the competition.

Balmain's Spring 2012 collection (by 25 year old Olivier Rousteing!!) is an example of basic colors being used as the foundation for a collection.  The added texture and embellishment are what most certainly sets the collection apart.  There is a western/rock influence with a little boho (with the long denim skirts).....I thoroughly enjoy it!!

To mix things up a little, as Marc Jacobs always does, the Louis Vuitton collection has added texture and pastel accents that are done in an ombre fashion.  Although the collection is not my favorite, I appreciate the art, structure, and creativity.
